This message was delivered by IRM Head Sonja Derkum to the GCF Board at B.46 (12.B)

Co Chairs, members of the Board,

As this is likely my last opportunity to address you in my capacity as Head of the IRM, I will address you with a simple message: thank you. Thank you for the trust you have provided me with. Over the past three years, the IRM has evolved significantly.

We have delivered outcomes for affected people. We have proven on a number of occasions,– the GCF can demonstrate to be an accountable organisation when it matters. We have strengthened local grievance capacity. And we have strengthened the IRM to become a mechanism capable of responding to grievances in a growing GCF portfolio.

Most importantly, we now have a strong team, a clear structure, and an institution that is better equipped to provide accountability where needed.

I am genuinely grateful for the support this Board, the EAC and the BC have shown to the IRM – its team and to myself over the years, in particular your support in the various WPB and case discussions.

Accountability cannot be delivered on goodwill alone. It requires people, resources, expertise, and above all institutional commitment. The progress we have made has only been possible because that commitment existed.

It has been an honour to work for an organisation whose purpose is so important. For me, supporting communities that may have experienced harm and helping ensure that their voices are heard has been both a privilege and a responsibility.

It was the principal reason I joined the GCF, and it remains the reason I have been proud to serve it. Finally, I hope that you will extend to my successor the same trust and support that you have shown me, and continue to champion the IRM and its independence in the years ahead.
